Summer Camp 2023 VOte

Vote by September 9th.

Per comments and presentations at the troop meeting Monday the scouts are evaluating 3 options for 2023 summer camp: Camp Alexander in Colorado, Camp Constantin in Texas and Camp Rockefeller in Arkansas.  Pending any availability issues, we will be shooting for the week of June 10/11-17/18 per usual.

I'd encourage everyone to check out the video promos below along with visiting the camp websites, etc. to learn more about the options.  There are pros and cons to each camp - differences in logistics, weather, food, activities, etc.

We encourage all active scouts who intend to attend summer camp to vote for their top choice.  Please email our committee chair Tad Fielder and me with your top choice by Friday September 9.  Mr. Fielder's email is tad.fielder@gmail.com.  Mine is will.v.power@gmail.com.  Not all scouts are on this distribution list, so parents, please make them aware.

Camp Alexander (Lake George, Colorado) - Mountain activities like rafting, rock face climbing, mountain boarding and much cooler temperatures, but greater travel time & logistics and likely higher cost as a result.

Camp Constantin (Graford, Texas) - Great lake activities, close and the home base for 890B with many long-standing traditions.  Normally hot, but hey, we're from Texas and the water helps.  First 2 summer camps for the troop were here.

Camp Rockefeller - (Damascus, Arkansas) - Great camp food, facilities and COPE course for older scouts.  Hot with humidity, but well shaded which helps.  This was our most recent summer camp location.

Religious Emblem Program

Religious Emblem Program

Both Troops 890 Boys and Girls will be offering a Religious Emblem program through LHUMC. A scout is Reverent, and Senior Pastor Jill Jackson-Sears and Youth Minister Rocky Dwyer will lead these sessions this fall for 6th-8th grade scouts beginning Thursday September 15th from 6:30pm-7:30. There are seven sessions that will run seven consecutive Thursdays through October 27st. Make-up sessions can be held if a scout has a conflict for a session or two. The sessions will be held in person at the church.

Session 1: Thursday September 15th
Session 2: Thursday September 22nd
Session 3: Thursday September 29th
Session 4: Thursday October 6th
Session 5: Thursday October 13th
Session 6: Thursday October 20th
Session 7: Thursday October 27st

LHUMC will follow the P.R.A.Y. curriculum 'God and Church' which is recognized by many different protestant religious denominations. This program is for 6th-8th grade scouts. Please do not hesitate to participate just because your family may follow a faith other than Methodism. The P.R.A.Y. program is accepted by the following Christian denominations: Anglican, Baptist, Disciples of Christ, Episcopal, Lutheran, Nazarene, Presbyterian, Protestant and Independent Christian Churches, United Church of Christ, United Methodist and United Pentecostal. There is a separate program for Roman Catholics, but I would still recommend this program for our Roman Catholic scouts in Troops 890 B & G as it does not teach anything outside of the Christian Bible and therefore, I believe applies equally to Roman Catholics. If you do not follow any religious faith, you are still welcome to attend! Parents are welcome to attend the sessions as well and I would urge you to do so for at least the first session if you are unsure about this program. If you follow a faith outside of Christianity and you wish to attend a similar program, then please get in contact with John Anthony. LHUMC will not be able to offer a program for other faiths of course but there are resources at the district level for religious institutions in our area who may be able to provide a program that suits your religious faith.

See the email sent for frequently asked questions about this program.

Scouts who complete this program will be recognized at the next Court of Honor for their troop and will receive a Universal Religious Square Knot to be worn on the uniform. Also, a medallion can be purchased optionally by the scout family and worn on the uniform above the square knot. There will not be any costs to the scouts who participate in this program for program materials or the square knot. The only cost would be for the optional medallion which is $13.50.

If a scout has already taken this program before at a lower age level, for instance at the cub scout/Webelos level, they can take it again at an older grade level and can receive a star pin to go on the square knot they already have.

Scouts or parents can email (chaplain@troop890.org ) to sign up if they would like to attend the program this fall. Please let me know by Friday September 2nd so that the workbooks can be ordered. I will order the workbooks and there is not a cost for them carried over to the scouts.

For further information please reach out to John Anthony who is the Chaplain for both troops.
